Making Space for the Modern City: Paris, Tokyo, Taipei
This talk will look at how the city was “opened up” by the forces of modernization to yield new public space associated with the contemporary city—the boulevard, the park, the museum, the shopping mall.
This opening up was sometimes relatively benign and beneficial; sometimes it was accompanied by extreme violence.
The cities of Paris, Tokyo and Taipei offer very different conditions in this process, showing us that the global city is always global in its own way.
