In 2012, Xi Jinping took over a decayed and vulnerable Party of waning leadership.
Xi was determined to reinvent these institutions, at great cost to himself.
The struggle for the survival of China’s political institutions is happening before our eyes.
The 19th Party Congress should be seen in this context.
Can the Party maintain sufficient autonomy from society to become a state Party, its supposed long-term goal?
