War and Peace: Sandwiched Between Great Powers, Where Do Small States Fit?

The Cold War ended, but its shadow remains. The United States wants to keep its power over East Asia, but China is challenging its dominance. Russia, on the other hand, wants to maintain its leading role in the European continent, while Europe and the United States work in alliance to counter it. Located 8,000 kilometers apart, Taiwan and Ukraine seem to be unrelated. However, they both are situated in pivotal locations that are of strategic importance. Looking at Taiwan’s position from Ukraine’s experience, there are hints as to how small states sandwiched between leading powers can make their strategic decisions.
